View Distance And Mounting Height for Corresponding LED Display Sizes

Overview of Core Concepts

1. Pixel Pitch (P): The distance between the centers of two adjacent pixels on the screen, measured in millimeters (mm).

For example, P3, P4, P6, etc. This is the most critical factor determining view distance.

2. Minimum View Distance: The closest distance at which a continuous, clear image can be perceived without distinguishing individual pixel dots.

3. Optimal View Distance: The range of distances where the visual experience is most comfortable and information acquisition is most efficient.

4. Mounting Height (H): The vertical distance from the bottom (or center) of the screen to the ground, affecting the view angle.

Relationship Between Pixel Pitch and Viewing Distance

1.Core Formulas (Rules of Thumb):

1).Minimum View Distance (meters) ≈ Pixel Pitch (mm) × 2 ~ 3

Example: For a P3 screen, Min Distance ≈ 3mm × 2 = 6 meters. Within 9 meters, pixel grain might be visible.

2).Optimal View Distance (meters) ≈ Pixel Pitch (mm) × 3 ~ 8

Example: For a P3 screen, Optimal Distance ≈ 9 meters to 24 meters.

3).Maximum Effective View Distance (meters) ≈ Screen Height (meters) × 30 (Suitable for informational/ advertising displays)

For video walls or stage backdrops, this formula is less strict and depends more on content resolution and font size.

2.Selection Guide:

1).Close-Range Viewing (e.g., meeting rooms, exhibition halls): Choose small pixel pitch (P1.2 - P2.5).

2).Mid-to-Long Range Viewing (e.g., storefronts, hotel lobbies): Choose P2 - P4.

3).Long-Range Viewing (e.g., outdoor billboards, stadiums): Choose P4 - P10 or larger.

Relationship Between Mounting Height and Viewing Zone

1. Core Principles & Formulas:
The goal is to allow most viewers to watch within a comfortable vertical view angle

(typically recommended within ±20°) to avoid prolonged neck strain.

1).Determine Screen Bottom Height (Hb):

Indoor: Typically ensure the screen bottom is above the head height of most viewers (approx. 2.2m - 3m) to avoid obstruction.

Outdoor/Large Halls: Needs calculation based on the farthest viewing distance (Df).

Rule of Thumb: Screen Bottom Height Hb ≈ Farthest Viewing Distance Df × 0.1 ~ 0.3

Example: For Df = 30 meters, Hb can be between 3m and 9m.

2).Determine Screen Center Height:

The ideal screen center should be at or slightly above the average viewer's eye level.

For seated venues (auditoriums, theaters): Screen Center Height ≈ Seated eye level of the last row viewers (typically ~1.2m).

For standing viewing (malls, exhibitions): Screen Center Height ≈ Average standing eye level (approx. 1.5m - 1.6m).

3).Viewing Angle Verification:

The viewing angle (α) for the closest viewer should be within a reasonable limit (typically < 30°).

tan(α) = (Screen Top Height Ht - Viewer's Eye Height) / Closest Viewing Distance Dn

Comprehensive Application Example: An Outdoor P6 Billboard

Screen Size: Width 10m, Height 5.6m (16:9 aspect ratio)

Pixel Pitch: P6 (6mm)

Calculations:

Optimal Viewing Distance: P6 × (3~8) = 18m ~ 48m.

Maximum Effective Distance: Screen Height 5.6m × 30 ≈ 168m (Able to see the overall image and large text from this distance).

Mounting Height : Assume the main audience is between 20-100 meters away.

Bottom Height Hb ≈ 100m (Df) × 0.2 = 20m.

Thus, the viewing angle to the screen top for a viewer at 20m is approximately: arctan(((20+5.6)-1.5)/20) ≈ arctan(1.2) ≈ 50°.

This is somewhat large but may be acceptable for short-term viewing of outdoor ads.

For more comfort, the bottom height could be increased to, say, 25m.

Final Recommendation:
For actual projects, the best approach is to provide your LED display supplier with your site plan,

viewer locations, and primary content type (text/video).

They can perform professional viewing distance simulations and optical calculations to

recommend the most suitable size, pixel pitch, and mounting height.
